The NBA game is controlled by the officials who consist of referee, two umpires, and table officials. The referee is also called as crew chief and umpire are also referred as referee. The responsibility of table officials are to keep track of scores of each team, time keeping, also keeping track of fouls made by individual player and the team as a whole. They also handle player substitutions; keep track of shot clock, team possession arrow amongst many other things.

In the game of basketball, to resume a game a method that is used is also known as a jump ball. In this method an NBA official tosses the ball up into the air, the two teams attempt to gain control over the ball taking care not to make any foul. This is also called the opening tip.
